More ram and OS upgrade for my home server

I got a couple of upgrades for my [home server]/blog/2012/07/04/my-new-home-server/. First, I got more ramGSkill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL. Not really sure what the difference is with my first set of ram. The specs are the same, CL9, 1.5v, DDR3 1600. It recognized them and no problems so far. I ‘m now running a total of 16GB. The heatsinks are different too. Oh well, we’ll see how they run.

I wanted to run Hyper-V and didn’t want to run out of memory. Here’s the before and after pics.

Here’s the configuration with just 2x4GB.

Here’s the new ram I bought.

There’s the new set up with 16GB total ram (2x4GB)x2 haha – or I guess 4x4GB but it’s not quad channel. It’s still running dual channel. This should be plenty for me to run at least 3 virtual machines along with the host OS and a file server.

I also upgraded the OS. Actually I did a full install to Windows Server 2012 Standard. Everything worked well until I enabled Hyper-V. Then I found out it had something to do with my USB3.0 hardware. I disabled it in the bios and I was back in business. So far so good. I’ve been running Windows Server 2012 for about a week now. The ram I just installed tonight. Though with 8GB it was running fine. I even had Windows Server 2012 running on my HP N36L microserver. Not as great, but it runs. I haven’t done much with it and it’s off right now. I’ll do some tests and post some stuff later.
